Modernization of commercial space
Dilapidated commercial space from the times of the previous regime can be found in every Slovak town. Often standing on lucrative land, although attracting new investors proves to be difficult. Their technical condition does not meet current requirements and upgrading is costly.
A shining exception is the shopping center in Hlohovec. Over its long years it has been losing its original glory and tenants. Therefore, the city has decided to act – to restore the commercial space in the city center to attract new business and shoppers.
Original state
The building from the 80’s no longer meets today’s standards and was almost completely covered by various posters and billboards. It was necessary to improve the overall look and energetically streamline its operation. A substantial investment required the upgrade of window panes, roof coating, and public spaces.

The original project documentation did not exist, which gave us a lot of trouble when preparing the project in such a way as not to increase the budget for implementation. Unforeseen events are common encounters during any reconstruction, and was proven to be so even in this case project. Structural defects were found during the construction phase, which requires immediate remediation.
Architecture
The building consists of three separate blocks and welcomes its visitors from afar with three massive cubes. Our intention was to cautiously and aesthetically incorporate the new look of the building into the surrounding environment, yet prevail in catching the attention of the passing public.
Since it was the reconstruction of an existing building, we intervened very minimally with the original architecture. Instead, we focused on improving the overall appearance and functionality of the building, including materials.
Overall appearance and details
The façade is made up of a combination of multicolored plaster and transparent panels with wood decors to distinguish materials and separate into individual blocks A, B, and C. The idea was to reshape the entire mass and create a cascade impression that is most visible at the entrance to the city.
The glass façade compliments the spectrum of light that cast shadows during the day and are lighted up with LED’s at night. Together with illuminated Trespa panels a fascinating light effect is created. This form of glass application was unique at the time of implementation. It was necessary to develop a system installation and the possibility of future service.
Resulting effect
Upon completion, the House of Services was occupied by tenants and helped expand the range of services in the city center. Its new presentation was generally accepted by the public and residents alike. During the breaks or the after hours time, many like to meet in the premises or in the vicinity. We can hope that this success can become a model for adaptation of other buildings from the past.
